A Sad Record: Taxes on Gas Now Over 50%

Montreal, January 13, 2016 – Adrien Pouliot, leader of the Quebec Conservative Party, took pity today on Greater Montreal area drivers.  Those who bought their fuel at 97.9¢ per litre this week (for example, at the Costco on Bridge St.) broke the dubious record of paying more than 50% of their tab in taxes.

« An 80 liter fill-up will cost the Montreal driver $39 in taxes!  The Quebec government, particularly the Liberal government, has increased taxes on fuel in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.  It slyly introduced a 4¢ per litre carbon ecotax in 2015.  As if this was not enough, the government increased the registration fees for larger car engines as of 2016.  Yes, we all want to save the planet but Quebec is already doing way more than its fair share and Quebecers are paying the highest price for gas on the continent.  Can Premier Couillard guarantee that there will be no further increases on the tax burden of car drivers in 2016? » asked Mr. Pouliot
